This is one of her first recording from the early 90s (originally released by Auvidis in 1989), where she plays with her husband Khalifa Ould Eide. Listen to her powerful voice, accompanied by the 'ardin', a mauritanian harp also used as a percussion. A very nice mix of arab and manding music emanates from this album.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">A very widespread instrument in South East Asia, the
gong is mainly played on its own in small tribal mountain villages (just
like in other parts of Indonesia and the Philippines).
But on the contrary to the sophisticated burmese or indonesian orchestras, the pace here is with little ornaments and
quite repetitive, only played along with small drums, sometimes with singing. The result is mesmerizing, hypnotizing like some unplugged techno music <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">— listen to an excerpt —
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">A fine piece of french avant-garde jazz indeed, from the early 1990's. <div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
Songs from Baraawe — These recordings were conducted in the Eighties in the streets of Baraawe (or Brava, a few kilometres from Mogadiscio); they are little gems of popular african music. As in major areas of the horn, Arab and Asian influences are very strong, the guitar is played like the ’ud and the vibes of Bollywood trill through a small flute. Most surprising is however the free use of a small electric Casio-type organ and of its cheap drum machine, which gives quite a "video games" feeling to this rudimentary and totally unheard Taarab.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Picked-up on a market in the north of Burma where it was unreservedly played on a loudspeaker, this tape is the recording of a young boy known as Saw Le Aung (from what I got as tranlsation), singing solo on an electric mandoline. His tunes are pretty cheerful with subtle variations of tones and attacks. The recording will enrapture lovers of repetitive musics and children voices, and those also keen on modern versions of traditional mountain tribes music from the area, such as the lao-thaï Mo Lam.
Quintet Clarinettes was the association of five french musicians: Michel Aumont, Dominique Jouve, Dominique Le Bozec, Erik Marchand and Bernard Subert who created a new sound for the breton traditionnal music. They ingeniously mixed the sound of classical clarinet and bass clarinet with the Treujenn Gaol from Brittany. This rudimentary clarinet (translated as Black Stick or Bazh Du, for it looks like the stalk of a cabbage) in just one octave, is played along the bombarde during Fest-Noz. Of course they had to ask Louis Sclavis to be on a few titles. I used to listen days and nights to these albums, and I must say, I even learned to play the clarinet thanks to these guys!

A sort of zither (close to the latvian kokles) the kantele is a mainstay in Finnish music, a popular folk instrument par excellence. It appeared in the epic Kalevala, fallen in disuse at the beginning of the 20th century and then rediscovered by passionate musicians. This brilliant CD contains compositions recorded in the 60's and 70's by Martti Pokela, pioneer among the pioneers, inspired by Lapp traditional songs. The metallic sound, quite close to the harpsichord or the harp (horses’hairs were formely used for the cords) and the lonely solo playing give a kind similarity to the sound of musical boxes, with their melancholic tunes, as if this was funfair music from old times.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">Founder of the Agency for Traditional Musics from Auvergne (in the centre of France) as well as of the Silex music label, singer André Ricros also plays the <i style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">cabrette<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;"> (a kind of small bagpipe, also known under the french name of <i style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">musette<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">) and is a great amateur of jazz music. On this album co-signed with clarinet wizard Louis Sclavis, and recorded with trombone master Alain Gibert, André Ricros composes with rythm boxes, bendirs, melodicas and samplers on traditional songs from the Auvergne country. This recording of La Paloma by Hans Albers is part of the amazing Trikont collection attempting to gather as many recordings of this old song as possible. But when my wife bought this 1953 EP in Hamburg for my birthday, we would not know that Albers was as famous as the tune itself… The way he nonchalantly (not to say drunkenly) sings along with the accordion and an ethereal choir, actually made us thought of the perfect score for a SpongeBob SquarePants episode (the Popeye cliché on the cover is also great)!
